From language barriers to limited opportunities and discrimination, immigrants and their families face various socioeconomic struggles on a daily basis. Our overall mission is to alleviate these burdens in a holistic way that prioritizes overall health, the environment, and equality. This would mainly be achieved by providing easy access to educational courses that emphasize language skills, career development, and cultural competency. What sets us apart from other organizations is our desire to see each individual as a human being and not as a statistic. The immigrant narrative is that of persistence, resiliency, and hope. We aim to guide those qualities in a way that ascends all communities to success.
ACtS United is an acronym for Ascending Communities to Success. Our mission is to ease the transition of immigrants and their families to life in the U.S. by lessening social, economic, and educational burdens endured by these individuals on a daily basis. As Global Studies majors and long-time members of the Richmond community, we have expertise in identifying and developing solutions to address these specific issues in the Central Virginia area with empathy and compassion.
Funds will go towards helping us provide easy access to quality educational courses that emphasize language skills, career development, and cultural competency. This includes textbooks, lesson plans, venues, transportation, and other necessary materials. These courses, along with encouragement, have the power to change the lives of individuals-- and subsequently, the community as a whole. Quality education and a welcoming learning environment are the essences of our mission, and with your help, we can offer just that.
Our founders are not strangers to perseverance through adversity. Having immigrated from Mexico in her early childhood and spending extensive time around other immigrants, CEO Alice has experienced first-hand the joys and tribulations of immigrating to the U.S., igniting her passion for helping her community from a young age. She now wishes to pay her success forward by helping others achieve their fullest potential. An advocate for the underprivileged and the environment, COO Christiana is dedicating her energy, time, and skills to ACtS United in hopes of alleviating the negative effects of the various inequalities her community faces. Her idealism and empathetic nature makes her see the world for what it could be, a useful mindset in the realm of nonprofits. A Richmond native and child of Cambodian refugees, CCO Michelle’s family emphasized the power of education and instilled in her the virtues of perseverance and self-discipline early on. Through ACtS United, she is determined to give back to her hometown by providing Richmond immigrants with the guidance and resources that would have helped her own family during their transitional journey in the past.
