I decided to establish The Debra Nedelak Memorial Fund not only to honour the life and legacy of my mom, but to contribute to The Peace Arch Hospice Society bringing forth acknowledgment to the amazing staff for their incredible care they provide for the loved ones of our community. The other reason for the fund is to raise money for cannabis (CBD) research for the treatment of cancer.  This facet of the fund has since evolved to fundraising for cannabis (CBD) research, education and advocation for the benefits of CBD as a treatment option for cancer and other illnesses.

Mom was born Debra Susan Frith on April 22, 1956.  She grew up in Richmond until relocating to White Rock/South Surrey area with my dad, Jim Nedelak in January of 1980.  Debra lost her mom to cancer at the young age of 46, and Debbie's first cancer diagnosis  came at the same age at which her mom was originally diagnosed.  Deb was lucky enough to beat that first diagnosis.  However the breast cancer came back 20 years later, albeit a different strain.  She survived that cancer too, both times enduring vigorous, strong chemotherapy treatments.  Her most recent and third cancer diagnosis came in July of this year, 2019.  This recent one was new and not breast cancer, much more aggressive and almost certainly terminal from the time of diagnosis.  This time she had brain surgery to remove 2 tumours, and strong doses of radiation in attempt to shrink or slow the growth of the other 4 tumours.  This course of treatment however rendered her too weak for a further "conventional" regiment of chemo and radiation.  This is where the whole memorial fund comes in.  I'd like to see CBD as a treatment possibility for patients that are too weak for chemotherapy or radiation.  Not only as a last resort treatment, but an initial treatment option.  I'd like to see a portion of funds raised go to research that can one day make this a reality.  I feel that in order for CBD to be accepted fully in the medical field, a portion of funds should be directed to CBD advocacy and education groups as well.  I am hoping to allocate a portion of funds to CBD research, education and advocacy.  The other portion of funds will be directly donated to the Peace Arch Hospice Society.  The care mom experienced while at the hospice was amazing.  As a family we couldn't have asked for more.  I would like to see the staff get the acknowledgement they deserve, and the new hospice get supplies and amenities as needed to help make the saddest time for a family just a little bit better.
