What is the problem?
Mohammed is a young father of four. As an engineer, he is trained to solve problems with technology.
He founded Gaza's first 3D printer company, starting with one device which he used to print several others. He ran a workshop for years that was collaborating with others to produce high quality medical devices for the Ministry of Health, and distributed supplies to paramedics and emergency room doctors. Their prototype of a low cost 3D printed stethoscope has also been used by governments in other countries to deliver working medical technology at a fraction of the cost of commercial devices. They saved lives with their low-cost tourniquets during the Great March of Return.
During the start of the COVID pandemic, his workshop began to produce PPE. His company innovatively used 3D printers, beating the blockade by using new technology and supplying hospitals and primary care providers. But the company was destroyed, twice: it was bombed in 2021, and most recently, again it was bombed by the IDF on Nov. 11 in the 2023 war. Now Mohammed wishes to re-start his company Tashkeel 3D abroad, in either Canada or Europe, so he can continue to develop low cost, open source medical technology that can benefit the whole world, and reach the people who need it.
What can we do?
Mohammed is a father of four. Now, he must leave the city where his children were born, so they can find safety while Gaza struggles under occupation. The cost to get on the list to leave the territory is high: we think that Mohammed will have to pay at least $5000 USD per adult and $2500 per child to evacuate through the Rafah border. We are fundraising to support him with these costs, so he can protect his family and continue his important work from the safety of a third country.
Who am I?
I am Lorax Horne, a freelance journalist. I was in Gaza to witness the first Open Health Conference for Free Software and Hardware, that was organized by Mohammed and a Canadian medical doctor. Mohammed hosted me for two weeks while I was visiting his city, acting as my translator and fixer. He introduced me to all the technology incubators in the city, like Gaza Sky Geeks, as well as hosting me at his 3D printer workshop where they were working on a prototype of a prosthetic that could be produced using waste plastic. Their goal was to supply prosthetics to non-profits that worked with child amputees. Since then, Mohammed launched the company Tashkeel 3D, which helped to print medical devices during the COVID pandemic.
