This is the second time Toronto has hosted a festival of this type. The initiative for the festival came from Artistic Director Viv Moore’s visit to Kent to study with her mentor, Kerry Fletcher. Whilst there, she participated in the improvisational step dance jams of the Kentish Romany and was enticed by the sheer joy that comes from performers making sounds derived purely from the body. Viv witnessed the vital connection made between artists and audiences, and knew that the creation of a broader body percussion festival would give people an opportunity to watch professional and community-based groups celebrating the joys of rhythm.
Body Percussion can be Movement, Dance, Voice and Sound created solely through the body, footwear and instruments that are extensions of the body. The range of forms in this festival includes Inuit Throat Singing, Bharatanatyam, Ethnic-Contemporary, Kapa Haka Dance, Tap Dance, Beatbox, Body Percussion, Georgian Polyphony, A Capella Singing and Vocal Percussion, English Sword Dance, Belly Dance, Gumboot, Flamenco Dance and Ottawa Valley Step Dance.
This year the performers are all from the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario and across Canada, focusing the festival on the talents of national artists. There are three performances featuring six artists/groups per show. All performances will be held at Harbourfront Centre Theatre, with tickets ranging between $12 - $30.
Participatory workshops will be taught by Master Teachers (who are also performing in the festival), who will share their technique and creativity in Inuit Throat Singing, Body Percussion and Gumboot. Workshops will provide a novel and vibrant experience not only for the artists, but people from all walks of life and all ages. All workshops will be held in the Brigantine Room and cost $10 each.
