Camphill Agualinda: Upholding Human Rights and Creating Family
Imagine waking up one day in a place where you're not allowed to leave, surrounded by strangers who treat you as if you were less capable, less valuable. Imagine having no community or family to lean on. For many adults with special needs, this is their reality. But at Camphill Agualinda, we are shifting the paradigm.
We are not just an NGO; we are a vibrant, supportive family striving to help people with special needs live an independent life. A family that breaks down the barriers of paternalistic politics and discrimination.
Our philosophy is deeply rooted in the recognition of the human rights of individuals with special needs. We believe that everyone, regardless of their abilities, has the right to live a fulfilling, independent life. That's why we emphasize the importance of deinstitutionalization and community living, as highlighted by the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disabilities (IASSID).
In our 10 years of existence, we have witnessed the transformative journeys of our residents. Our community has grown from a handful of individuals to twelve permanent residents and numerous non-residents participating in our programs. We have made a mark in the global conversation by being a TEDx Host.
But our journey is far from over.
What sets Camphill Agualinda apart is our dedication to sustainability in every aspect. Our residents are not only nurtured physically and emotionally but also through a symbiotic relationship with the environment. We are proud to say that we self-produce 25% of our organic produce. This, along with our focus on 100% sustainable construction, alternative energy, and recycling, makes Camphill Agualinda a unique model of holistic care.
Now, we dream bigger.
Our vision is to expand our model across Colombia, creating supportive communities for the 14,000 people with special needs in vulnerable situations. We need your help to turn this dream into reality.
Be a part of Camphill Agualinda's journey. Donate to our foundation, support our residents through our handcrafted goods, or spread the word about our mission. Let's build a world where everyone is given the opportunity to grow, learn, and live independently.
Remember, at Camphill Agualinda, we are not just a community; we are a family. In our house, we are humans, we make mistakes, we apologize, we give second chances, we have fun, we give hugs, we forgive, we are patient, and above all, we love each other.
Join us in creating a society where adults with special needs aren't merely institutionalized, but are celebrated every day.
