River Hopkins hasn't added a story.
We have a dear friend who is facing a 2nd degree felony charge
for a crime that did NOT HAPPEN. It is completely absurd that the
State Attorney's office for Marion County has yet to realize the
folly of this charge and toss it out before wasting (more) time and
money on attempting to prove that which never happened.
What's even more absurd is that they are going on the
testimony of 3 individuals (in addition to the alleged victim)
without taking into consideration that with all three have felony
records in Marion County and could hardly be considered reliable
witnesses.
Dana is a 60-year-old woman who loves to laugh and to work
with the animals others have thrown away. She lives her life in
service to abused and neglected animals. She founded and directed a
501c3 charitable organization that rescues and rehabilitates horses
(and other animals) in serious need, and has been developing an
Animal-Assisted Therapy program to give the rescued horses a new
purpose in life while reducing trauma and building trust in women
and children who have suffered abuse.
WHAT Happened?
Dana had been helping the alleged victim
for over two months - gave her a job and paid for her housing. It
became clear in a short time that the woman had serious anger issues
and a "victim mentality" - but Dana is an optimist and
thought they could work through all that. Finally she felt she
couldn't support this woman anymore, mainly due to the stress of the
constant anger and blame. It was after she expressed the necessity
of parting paths that the accusation happened.
WHAT?!
It's crazy, I know. Surreal, even. One would think
that Dana - who has never been arrested in her life would have more
credibility than a person with a record making such an outlandish
claim. BUT, there's a little more to it. The woman had three friends
who claimed to be witnesses, even though they were more than a
football field away from the alleged "incident." They all
signed sworn statements and their stories matched. Now it becomes
four against one.
Dana and her husband are of modest means, though they do own a
small house. The "victim" had made several comments while
staying there that if they ever decided to rent it out, she wanted
to be first on the list. She made similar comments about the
couple's 5-year-old car, recently purchased with a small down
payment. We can only speculate as to whether she thought she stood
to gain access to either of these if she managed to send Dana to
prison for a number of years. But it turns out there was another
motive, of which Dana was completely unaware. She has since learned
from others that all four people had mentioned "getting rid of
Dana" and convincing Animal Control to sign all 12 horses over
to them so they could sell them.
The whole situation is bizarre and shocking. Dana is a
kindhearted person, generous of spirit, known to share freely what
little she has. That someone would falsely accuse her of such a
crime is inconceivable. Yet, it's true.
Thank you for reading our story. Any and all help is greatly
appreciated. We want to ensure that Dana’s future is in the hands of
a good Criminal Defense lawyer that can help her fight this
injustice. Thank you kindly for your support.
