Marwo Abdi was separated from her family and beautiful home country of Somali when war broke out in 1990. She was only 6 years old. In 2008 she came to Canada through a WUSC scholarship. Since that time she has been able to sponsor her husband Mohammed to come to Canada and they have 3 beautiful children.

Now Marwo is trying to reunite with her mother, brother and two cousins, one of whom is a 12 year old child. All of them are living in a refugee camp. Marwo's mother has been living in refugee camps for 29 years and her brother and cousins have never known any other life. Please help us end this family separation and reunite Marwo with her family.

The money we are raising is an amount set by the federal government for privately sponsored refugees. Almost all of it ($53,763) will go to Marwo's 4 family members to help cover basics like rent, food, and clothing for their first year here when they are, as privately sponsored refugees, not eligible for government assistance. There is also $1,100 that is required by our Sponsorship Agreement Holder for contingency and administrative fees. We are so close to our goal of $54,863 and with the family at the last stage of their application approval process need to raise this money within two months. Can you help us with the final amount we need to reach our goal?

Cash donations give the family the most flexibility (and can be tax receipted) but the government will also recognize in-kind donations of furniture, food, and clothing. If you are interested in making an in-kind donation please contact us at

“Kalmo” is a Somali word which means assist or help. The Kalmo Refugee Support group formed in September of 2017 as a network of Marwo and Mohammed's friends, to help support Marwo to sponsor her family. For more information on Kalmo, Marwo and her family see

Thank you for helping by sharing this fundraiser through your networks and contributing what you can. No donation is too small, every amount helps!
