Black Girls With Green Thumbs hasn't added a story.
is growing a community who garden in their homes & within their communities to heal, nourish, & learn.
For various reasons, the practically decade long wellness journeys of 2 women with over 15 years of friendship intersected and sparked the development of Black Girls With Green Thumbs.
Since 2016 we have inspired confidence and increased the competence of aspiring home gardeners through our online community that builds awareness, educates, and encourages healthy lifestyle choices centered around gardening and nutrition.
With generous support during the last 2+ years we have partnered with Greater Philadelphia schools, libraries, and community partners to address issues of food access and food sovereignty. Through these relationships we have built gardens, developed educational programming for children and families, and provided direct resources to strengthen the health literacy of people worldwide (shout out to the internet!).
Yet, we do this work especially for people like us, Black mothers living in distressed, urban communities.
Public health disparities magnified during the pandemic, especially around food access. This made a strong case for self-sufficiency and underscored our essential responsibility: one another.
There are long-term health implications from living in environments with limited fresh food access, including higher rates of diet-related, chronic illnesses:
- Heart disease
- Hypertension
- Obesity
Children are even at risk for milestone delays as well as reduced cognitive function. Because these effects can also accompany poor diet choices and limited nutrition knowledge, we teach people to garden and the benefits of cooking with more plants. A better understanding of nutritional needs is a salve to one’s mental health.
IF our values and personal experiences of motherhood, chronic illness, disability, and family health history, coupled with a passion for environmental sustainability and stewardship is the force behind Black Girls With Green Thumbs, THEN our ongoing desire for spiritual wholeness and personal wellbeing is its power source.
With YOUR help we can nurture the spirits and feed the minds of women like us! Mothers like us, who recognize that we are our children’s first teachers; that fresh food is healing; that maternal health is a public health crisis; and that we are deserving of rest, respite, and reinvigoration.
On Juneteenth (6.19.2021) Black Girls With Green Thumbs will host a complimentary, day-long family wellness retreat for mothers and their children at a 325 acre wildlife reserve, The Schuylkill Center for Environment Education.
An immersion in nature reduces stress and restores focus. Families will leave re-energized from participating in:
- Trap yoga
- mindfulness exercises
- art therapy
- plant-based cooking
- nature hikes and canoeing!
Each of your contributions will support our ability to provide this enriching, memorable experience and:
- meals and snacks
- supplies
- keepsakes
Help a mother center herself and children explore their curiosity. Please share this campaign and invite others to make an impact!
