Cory West hasn't added a story.
Velleity is a Truant 33' sloop. Bill garden's design #611. A very seaworthy coastal cruiser. Click here and here for her specific design details. Click here for a list of Bill Garden designs held in the Mystic Seaport Museum.
Velleity was built in 1978 on Saltspring Island here in beautiful British Columbia and finished by a local couple. We quite by accident, met the couple in Ganges, on Saltspring Island several years ago while we were out on a Christmas sail. I was pulling up to the public dock and there were two people on the dock just having a pleasant evening stroll. As I approached the dock, they offered their assistance with the mooring lines. I greatfully accepted and then they said "We know this boat". This piqued my curiosity and and I asked " Really, how is that". to which they responded "We built it". Well, that started a long evening of sharing stories of adventures and excitement aboard Velleity. During their years onboard Velleity, Bill and Shelley ventured to Haida Gwaii a number of times and also circumnavigated Vancouver Island on several occaisions. She also served as their home for 7 years, before they succumbed to footitis. A malady that is very familiar to all in the nautical world.
Vellity's second skipper was to the best of my understanding a writer. I know of at least one article for Pacific Yachting magazine that was written aboard her and I'm sure there were many more. Again, Haida Gwaii was a destination that Velleity was known in.
I know very little of Velleity's third skipper. Only, that when I bought her in 1997 she hadn't really been cared for and had been anchored in a bay in the Gulf Islands. A lonely life for a boat that had given so much of herself to her skippers and their families.
As I said, We bought Velleity in 1997 and have enjoyed her immensley. And, have put a great many hours and dollars into maintaining her. When we bought her, our intention was that she would serve as most other sailboats do, but in a very short order we fell in love with her and decided to move onboard full time. She served as our home for 13 years.
During that time she has taken us to such amazing places as Princess Louisa Inlet and Barkely Sound. Tod Inlet has also been a frequent stop to watch the fireworks display put on by Butchart gardens in the summer.
Velleity has given so much joy over the years that she deserves a little kindness in return. As you can imagine, a boat has a hard life and needs constant care and attention to be at her best, to serve her skippers and their families, but at some point she needs care that would cause some to just sell her and get something shiny and new. I don't want to sell Velleity, She has given so much and I want to bring her back to the condition she was in when she was new.
Last year she was given new batteries, a new prop and prop shaft. This year while repairing some damaged woodwork, I went to exercise her engine and found that her head gasket had failed and the engine block was filled with sea water. A new engine is on order and should be here in late July. She also needs a new paint job and the safety glass is delaminating and needs to be replaced. These are only a few of the many items that need attention.
We need your help! Velleity needs your help! There is only so much we can afford to do on our own and we have pretty much reached that point.
The photo above is 12 years old and shows Velleity anchored in a small bay in Ruxton Passage. So many photographs have been taken of her that it absolutely boggles my mind. There is even a seafood restaurant in North Vancouver that proudly displays a photo of Velleity in their dining room.
Help me bring Velleity back to her earlier condition so she can continue to give so much pleasure for generations to come.
Every little bit helps.Thank You so much for your support.
