For those of you who are close to me, you know this is my favorite time of year. All of the decorating, time with friends and family, food, laughter, giving of gifts, and celebrating a special birthday. This year, the giving of gifts has really been weighing down on my mind.
I'm still new to being a father but it didn't take me long to become a real sap when it comes to babies or little kids. Early on in Stacy(my wife)'s pregnancy, I was extremely nervous for what was to come and had no idea what I was getting into. Towards the end of her pregnancy, things started to change for me. One of the biggest changes was meeting The Strader's. Soon to be new parents just like Stacy and I, sitting in a birth class nervous and excited for what was to come. Since meeting in that class we've developed a strong friendship. Between sharing stories about our young ones and giving each other advice on parenting and life itself. The Strader's also share a strong love for the holiday season. That's why when I found out what was going on this season, I knew I wanted to do something for them.
Their son, Oliver, is 17 months old. Earlier this month Scott and Tiffany(Strader) found out that Oliver had developed cataracts in both his eyes. The doctors saw no sign of it in any of his doctor appointments or checkups. Scott and Tiffany knew something was going on when the noticed Oliver holding his books really close to his face and noticing more and more that he was running into things when walking. They took him to the doctor and they knew right away what was happening. The doctors told them Oliver will need surgery on both his eyes. The process will take place with two separate surgeries and Oliver will be in glasses, from what the doctors say, the rest of his life. Without the surgery, the doctors say this will lead to permanent blindness in both his eyes. This, obviously, is not the news anyone wants to receive. The positive outlook is a correction is on the way and Oliver should only run into items when he wants to (which is often, he moves really fast for a 17 month old!)
Even with insurance, after these two surgeries, Scott and Tiffany will be responsible for $6,500 out-of-pocket. I don't know about any of you, but I sure don't have $6,500 lying around. So I'm asking anyone who reads this, to dig down into your pockets and donate what you can. I want to give The Strader's a Christmas they'll never forget. Chances are, you'll never forget either. Thank you in advance for your help!
