Megan Shepperd-Haynes hasn't added a story.
Many of you know about Leif's terrible motor cycle accident on August 25th of 2012; his unlikely survival, his grim prognosis, & his miraculous yet extremely difficult & long lasting recovery from his severe traumatic brain injury. Leif did receive funding to live at his intensive inpatient traumatic brain injury rehab facility, but unfortunately DARS (Department of Assistive & Rehabilitative Services) has run out of money for their fiscal year. So this means his living there for 6 months is paid for, but any appointments, medications, extra services, etc are not covered. Normally the rehab facility would contact DARS when an upcoming appointment or medication needed to be covered & request the money. But when they have requested any services or money we have been told that they no longer have the funds even for simple appointments or medications. So all of the costs now fall back on us. DARS fiscal year does not begin again until September & that is Leif's last month in rehab. So we cannot wait for DARS to get more money, we must find it ourselves.
Leif was approved for disability but does not receive anything close to an income that is possible to survive off of & afford anything beyond the necessities. After bills, medications, necessities, etc. there is close to none left over. Therefore large unexpected costs are completely impossible for us to afford, even if we put as much as possible back monthly. The unexpected cost that has hit us that we are asking help with is Leif's hearing aid. Unfortunately Leif & I both cannot qualify for county health care (our last option) due to him receiving more than $250 MONTHLY. Leif IS on a 24 month waiting period for Medicare & will receive Medicare after the 24 months, but during this 2 year period (at least while he is at rehab) we were supposed to be able to RELY on DARS. But we did not imagine that they would run out of funds & we would then be responsible for all costs, with no possible help out there.
**We found out that due to his multiple blows his head took, his left ear's hearing was damaged quite a bit. This hearing loss added to his visual issues, attention deficits, problem solving, decision making, impulsivity, memory deficits, etc; causes added difficulty that could be aided or "fixed". Poor hearing was negatively affecting ALL areas of Leif's rehab program. Many of the deficits Leif has CANNOT be fixed or solved, so the ones that can, it is crucial that we do so ASAP to help ease difficulty in all areas so he can recover easier & with less frustration/difficulty.
**Since Leif's hearing was causing issues in him recovering, learning, attention, etc. his team strongly recommended that Leif get a hearing aid. Although DARS did pay for the "hearing evaluation", he needed a "hearing aid evaluation" & the device itself. DARS would not pay for either of these things concerning Leif's hearing aid. So I started looking for options. I found one! But it did not come cheap. Luckily we are members at SAMS Club & the woman at the hearing center said she would evaluate him for FREE & tell us what he needed. Which was fantastic!
**But once this was done, we still needed to purchase the hearing aid itself. The cost for the ONE BTE (behind the ear) - left side - ENG 32 with Speaker Tube was $1,298.90. If you purchased the hearing aid at SAMS they were having a "deal" going on that you could apply it to a SAMS Credit Card & if you paid it off in FULL within 1 year of the purchase, they will add ZERO interest. We decided this was our best option. My Grandma got the card needed & purchased Leif's hearing aid for him on Friday. But we MUST pay the minimum monthly payments every single month in order to not receive any interest & still get the special deal. Unfortunately, we absolutely cannot afford this. So we must ask for some help. Once again it is not easy to ask for help, but at times we have no other choice. The hearing aid was crucial for Leif's recovery & it could not wait any longer to be purchased. My Grandma was kind enough to put it on the SAMS Credit Card but we must keep up with the payments & the sooner we can pay it off the better!!!!
**Please help!!! We hate to ask for help & although it is embarrassing, we only ask when we truly need it! The amount listed as my "goal" to raise is the exact amount the hearing aid cost. (it made me roundup to the dollar but I added 1 cent. $1,301.99 was spent) So please share this site & pass it along & help us pay off this hearing aid my Hubby desperately needed for his recovery! It has already made a big difference & will make his recovery much easier!!!!! Thank you so so much.
