Kaitlin Ulin hasn't added a story.
According to the Australian Government Report, over 80% of the
world's shallow reefs are over-fished. Over-fishing can lead to
drastic changes in the fish populations and can impact communities
locally and nationwide. Unfortunately, such fishing techniques have
destroyed coral reef communities throughout the entire world,
including incredibly diverse regions such as Cambodia.
I am an undergraduate student majoring in zoology at The Ohio
State University that would like to continue my education at a
graduate school in marine biology or marine conservation biology.
Marine conservation is a topic that I am very passionate about and I
truly want to make a difference to all species that inhabit this
earth. Our aquatic species are very important to our daily lives and
if nothing is done to improve the state that our oceans are in right
now, the effects can be worldwide. The south Asian region is an area
that has been known for its rich biodiversity. Because this area is
a hotspot for marine species, particularly within coral reef
environments, it has become the target for unsustainable fishing.
Fishing practices such as overfishing, dynamite fishing and fishing
trawlers (a type of fishing in which a large net is carried behind a
boat – this results in a large amount of bycatch), have caused major
destruction in coral reefs and a deprivation of fish species in this
area. These fishing techniques directly affects the local
communities that rely on these fish as their main source in food
because they have overfished so much that there are a limited number
of fish left to catch.
Through a program with Reach Out Volunteers I would like to
contribute to marine conservation efforts in Cambodia by preforming
coral plantings in the coastal regions. These coral plantings will
directly benefit the local communities within Cambodia by
stimulating the biodiversity within aquatic systems and thus
providing sustainable and renewable fishing practices for the
communities. Previously, this organization has planted over 150
coral pods which have dramatically increased the abundance of fish
in the community. During this time, I will be SCUBA certified in
order to carry out these coral plantings and I will also educate the
locals about sustainable fishing and teach them English and reading
skills; a talent that is useful to all.
My trip would be two weeks long during late May to early June of
2016. I am asking anyone that would like to support me with my
conservation dream to please consider giving a donation to me so
that I can fulfil this dream. Currently I am seeking to raise
$4,000.00 for this trip. This total cost of $4,000.00 would include
my airfare (roughly $2,000.00), and the cost of the program ($1,995.00).
If I receive funding for this trip, I would be eternally
grateful to those that donated money. It would mean so much to me
because it has always been a dream of mine to assist with marine
conservation. For more information about the project, please
