In search of  effective treatment for disabling  stroke like-seizure-like epsiodes for my wife Barbara  who is a humanitarian in her own right and has always helped others, often volunteering via her past employer, The Salvation Army, at the SPCA, and as a community support specialist providing support to those with intellectual and mental disabilities. She also participated in the Meals on Wheels Program by delivering meals to seniors in the community, as well as donating to various charity organizations. Moreover, her love for social aid & support of the community prompted her to engage in a career change. Fall 2008, she enrolled in college and majored in Human Services (Social Sciences Discipline). However, shortly after her enrollment in college she fell ill and was evaluated by multiple specialists. She was diagnosed with a myriad of gastrointestinal disorders and a rheumatic disorder to name a few.  Although she does not harbor any of the criteria (risk factors) such as diabetes, smoking, drinking, or illicit drug use past or present, she was diagnosed with Gastroparesis (paralysis of the stomach muscles) and Chronic Pancreatitis (chronic inflammation of the pancreas) both of which are chronic, disabling, and have no cure. These conditions cause daily severe pain, nausea, vomiting, bowel dysfunction, and malabsorption due to the inability to consume a normal diet. She is unable to retain employment at this time. Despite multiple emergency room visits and hospitalizations, she ultimately graduated from college with honors. Unfortunately, one day after graduation she fell ill and required emergency care. Although, she had hoped that she would be able to return to work, she has began to suffer from neurological symptoms and have been advised not to drive. Diagnostics revealed that she has a cerebral aneurysm and a hole in her heart. She has been hospitalized for the past four months and suffers from  stroke–seizure-like symptoms that often present multiple times throughout the day. The episodes cause paralysis of her face and weakness on her right side. She is unable to speak or see when the episodes occur. She currently requires 23 pills per day for sustainablility along with a Asthmatic medication which cost $500 per month (co-pay). Due to her illness, I am currently on intermittent Family Medical Leave, but unfortunately am unpaid for time off. Due to the lost of wages, the cost of her care has become a financial burden. I know that she is a very proud woman, belives in the power of prayer, and would never seek financial help, but I would be grateful for all acts of kindness, even for those who just continue to pray for her.

Thank you,

Ty Whitehurst
