Human Rights and Election Observer Delegation (November 2013)
On November 24th, Hondurans will be heading to the polls nationwide to elect a new president, congress, state, and local officials. This will be the first election with opposition participation since the deadly coup of June 2009 that overthrew president Manuel (Mel) Zelaya. Various organizations, including La Voz de los de Abajo, a member of the Honduras Solidarity Network, will be sending delegations of observers from all over the world to engage with civil society groups, monitor the Honduran elections, and report on the human rights situation.
The goal of this fundraiser is to cover costs related to La Voz de los de Abajo's election monitoring delegations and post-election followup activities. This includes transporation, housing, food, etc. The hope is also to produce a video documentary of this historic event from the first hand accounts observed by the delegates.
Background:
On June 28, 2009 there was a coup d’état in
Honduras. The coup carried out by the Honduran elite, military, and
police was condemned around the world. Many tens of thousands of
Honduras took to the street in resistance and have maintained their
resistance for more than 3 years despite a continuing human rights
crises that has left hundreds of activists murdered.
Currently, the opposition party LIBRE leads in the polls but there is a very high expectation that there will be fraud to keep democracy from returning to Honduras. Together with civil society and Human rights organizations they are denoucing the escalation of political violence and repression by the state in the lead up to the elections. They are calling for International Solidarity by inviting the international community and media to visit Honduras and observe the electoral process.
In response, La Voz de los de Abajo, along with various organizations worldwide, is organizing delegations in November 2013. The delegations will be working in different areas of the country to help provide human rights coverage and election observation where it is most needed.
About La Voz de los de Abajo:
La Voz de los de Abajo has been
organizing delegations in solidarity with Honduras for almost 15
years. Since the 2009 coup we have taken 7 delegations to accompany
the social justice organizations and resistance across the country.
