Hi! My name is Francisco Patiño (but I go by Frank) and I am a recent graduate from The University of Texas-Pan American with a double major in Pre-Medical Biology and General Studies. Raised in the border region of South Texas, the Rio Grande Valley (RGV), I've witnessed the scarcity of physicians and medical care in my community. Therefore, I want to become a Physician to serve my community in the RGV. This past march, I received my acceptance offer from Harvard Divinity School to pursue a Masters in Theological Studies (MTS) with an emphasis in Science, Religion & Medicine. I would like to pursue this degree because I strongly believe that faith plays an important role in helping patients recover and I would like to conduct research about this relationship and be able to provide holistic care to my patients when I become a physician. I witnessed this relationship between faith and medicine a couple of years ago when my sister was diagnosed with Thyroid Gland cancer. I saw first hand how she recovered better when she found peace through her faith, with the support of our family, although her physician seemed distraught and intolerant when our family prayed by her bed side. I want to be a different kind of physician, a holistic physician, and not only treat my patients but rather care for them. I am a first generation college student, I was the first to graduate from college on May 11th 2013 and am also the first one to pursue a higher education. I obtained a $25,000 scholarship, that covers most of my tuition, but the estimated cost of attendance to Harvard is approximately $50,000. However, I am sure I can reduce expenses and live on less than that. My family and I have been working and saving money and so far we've been able to pay for an extra $1600 for the mandatory first semester of medical insurance at Harvard, $2000 for the security deposit for a room and the first and last month of rent. In addition, I was also awarded $4000 to earn with a work-study position. That being said, I am hoping to fundraise $4000 for my first semester at Harvard. This amount would help me pay for rent and utilities for approximately 4 months and would allow me to use what I earn from my work-study job for books, transportation and food. Benjamin Franklin once said, that "an investment in educations pays the best interest." Please invest in me and the RGV community through my education. Because, I promise to become a contributing member of my community in the RGV. Anyone supporting my dream for a higher education will receive a personally written 'thank you' letter. Those of you who can provide more than $50 dollars will also receive a small token of appreciation from Harvard University. Thank you for taking the time to read this. I will zealously save the names of anyone supporting me in my diary :D Thank you and God bless you.
