Good News! Arwen has been approved by insurance for an insulin pump and a continuous blood glucose monitor. However, the bad news is that they will not cover a very important component (remote monitor) which will aid in preventing her from slipping into insulin shock overnight. The fact that Arwen has a difficult time recognizing the symptoms of hypoglycemia (even when her sugar drops) makes continuous monitoring a critical part of her diabetes management, but she has an even more difficult time waking up from a deep sleep, even with alarms going off. This means that if she were to go critically low overnight, it would fall upon us, her parents, to respond to the alarm and save her life. A remote monitoring system could mean the difference between waking Arwen up to drink some juice, or her ending up in the hospital in a coma, or worse. As it stands we wake up four times a night to check her sugar with a fingerstick, and a remote monitor would allow our family to get the first full night's rest since her diagnosis. Her insurance will not pay for this device and it costs about $2000.
