Mia Nissen & Earle Peach hasn't added a story.
On Jan 17, 2016 two courageous land defenders boarded a Kinder Morgan drilling barge at Westridge marine terminal, with the intention of stopping Kinder Morgan's drilling in the Salish Sea. The drilling was being done on unceded Coast Salish territory in so called Burnaby, BC. These defenders had consent from a Coast Salish chief (Tulsiim Kiapalanexw) to deliver a stop work order to Kinder Morgan's contractors. The stop work order was delivered and the drill was stopped by non-violent occupation of the rig. The defenders spent a long cold night on the barge to ensure the drill remained inactive.
The following morning (Jan 18, 2016) they were joined by five more land defenders. After spending half the day on the barge, ten heavily armed RCMP ERT (Emergency Response Team) officers boarded the barge to extract the seven defenders. These were not your run-of-the-mill police officers, as they were equipped with tactical assault rifles. Many view this as an excessive show of force by the RCMP, as authorities knew it was a non-violent occupation. Thankfully, no one was harmed in the extraction. The group was removed from the Kinder Morgan barge via police boat, and transported to the Burnaby RCMP detachment for detention and processing. All of the warriors were released on promises to appear in court on April 19, 2016.
This direct action proved to be quite successful, as the next day (Jan 19, 2016), the drill barge ceased operation and was witnessed leaving the Kinder Morgan Westridge marine terminal! The surveying has stopped (for now) and the drill barge is at an unknown location. However, Kinder Morgan's so called work permit for surveying extends until late February 2016.
This fundraiser is to help the "Westridge Seven" with legal fees associated with their arrests and charges. We would like to acknowledge that this is just one of many worthwhile fundraisers and struggles that are currently taking place all across Turtle Island. Please support and share as you see fit.
Stay tuned to https://www.facebook.com/burnabymountain/ for updates. An event at the Heartwood Community Cafe http://www.heartwoodcc.ca/ is being planned for early April. In solidarity with all land defenders!
