Yesterday at Hen Harbor, Elsa went to lie down in the sun with her friend Jumbo, but something was wrong. Instead of relaxing in the warm rays, Elsa could only stand hunched up, chirping pitifully and straining.
We rushed her to the emergency vet and he confirmed what we suspected: stuck eggs (or more specifically, an impacted oviduct).
Although the vet removed a large chunk of the egg-mass, there is much more stuck inside her, and it can only be removed surgically.
As is so often the case, Elsa's suffering is rooted in the animal agriculture industry -- which has bred hens to lay many more eggs than their little bodies can handle. With Elsa, her oviduct broke and stopped pushing out eggs. Stuck inside her body, the eggs have been solidifying and growing putrid with infection.
Elsa is in so much pain, and her situation is dire. She has been in the critical care ward receiving fluids and pain meds as she awaits surgery.
