Agency for Advocacy, Referral & Case Management hasn't added a story.
The Shorty O'Neil Village which is a 40 bed, low care aged care facility facing closure. Some elderly will need to move far away from the place they grew up, their families and friends. The current aged care provider decided not to fix up the facility and announced a sudden closure. We consider it an appalling way to treat the elderly and that it was unwarranted to close it down. We want to build up a fund to help the elderly to stop the loss of the 40 aged care beds as otherwise, we will have an aged care crisis in the Far West. Please help us!
So, what are we going to do with any funds raised?
FIrstly, we are going to become approved aged care providers in case the government doesn't allocate funding to build a new aged care facility in Broken Hill. Not being accredited meant that we couldn't nominate to take over Shorty when an Expression of Interest raised no applications and the provider wished to close.
Having adequate funds then means that we can nominate to take over the aged care beds if the above happens as at the end of the day, money will give us the power to make a difference. Shorty needs about $300,000 spent on installing fire sprinklers so once we pay for that, plus insurance and other costs, the dollars start to add up significantly.
If a new facility is funded, we need to consult the elderly to see if that meets their needs. It is highly likely that it won't cater for an increased need for aged care beds given our ageing population but we can't wait until the last minute to fundraise.
We need to prepare now as even though we will raise some funds, there will still be a lot of work to do if we need to re-establish the Shorty O'Neil Village or if we need to support those who have left the area for other aged care beds or wish to live at home but need support that they can't get otherwise.
What people particularly loved about Shorty was that it allowed for an aged person to live independently with support. To not be on the outskirts of town in a complex but to be in a home like environment when one could stop and chat to others. We are unsure if they get funding, if residents will need to share rooms and so a new facility may not meet the needs of those needing help but wishing to be somewhat independent. Just because it's not cost effective to live like they did in Shorty, it doesn't mean that as a community, we can't spend the funds to give the elderly independence, dignity and our respect.
Here are some links to local media stories which give you some idea of the shock to the community that they were going to close down the Village. Please contact me at aarcm.ltd@gmail.com if you need further info or the links don't work.
