Broseph was rescued from the Sapulpa Animal Shelter. He was on the euthanize list and we saved him. He's a very loving and energetic pitmix that is only 2-3 years old. He knows his basic commands, is well mannered (sometimes!) and loves all living things. He just wants to be near you and loved on. He loves cuddling on the couch, sun bathing and looking out windows. Bro also love "talking" to people. He has weird way of knowing what's going on and likes to give his input. This surgery will give him the life he deserves. Once he has fully recovered we will be looking to rehome him with a loving forever home. :)
Here's his story:
Broseph was found on the highway near a fatality accident. He was taken into the Sapulpa Animal Shelter. They were hoping his owners would come and pick up him since he had been a pet previously. They knew that by him already being neutered, knowing basic commands such as sit, stay and no. He knew how to play fetch and just had a general love for all living things. His stray hold was up and he was available for adoption. Bro is such a beautiful dog that many people were interested but no one took him home. When we went to take a look at this gorgeous boy we immediately fell in love and we also saw why no one left with him. He had a bad limp and the staff at the shelter believed he had a fractured hip. They didn't have a vet on staff so it couldn't be confirmed. We were told that it most likely wouldn't need surgery and that it just needed to heal. They did inform us that we could always take him back if surgery was required and if we couldn't afford it. We understood the risk we were taking but we couldn't let this beautfil and sweet dog be euthanized. So we decided to adopt him with the intention of letting him fully heal and then finding another home for him as we already have dogs. All he needed was time and we would give that to him.
When we got home he was welcomed and loved by our dogs. He especially likes our female schnauzer mix and gives her kisses. They love cuddling together and play often. We were keeping him from playing too much as he needed to heal. We immediately scheduled a vet appointment and took him in a week later. When the vet looked at him he immediately said that his hip is fine and there's nothing wrong with it. His concern turned towards his back leg. His knee was 3 times as big as the other knee. We had noticed that he was favoring that leg and wasn't put much pressure on it. When he would run he would hold that leg and just use his 3 others. We assumed it was because of his hip. The vet told us we needed to see a specialist and recommended several. After calling around and getting quotes we went with the one that was most affordable. We also had a good vibe from the vet and he was very informative over the phone. We scheduled an appointment with him to have him looked at.
When we arrived at the Alta Vista Animal Hospital, Bro was all smiles and loved getting attention from the receptionist. Dr. Gardner took us into the exam room and said it was definitely his knee just by the the first look. He did some movement tests and came to a conclusion. Bro will need to have Cranial Cruciate Rupture Surgery. He has several torn ligaments, a worn down meniscus and arthritis build up. He also has what's called Drawer Knee. The vet said that this is a very severe blown knee. He believes that Bro has had it at for at least 9 months and the cause is severe trauma to the knee that could have been caused by being hit by a car. We're not positive on the cause, we just know that it needs to be fixed.
We weren't prepared for this expense but couldn't take him back to the shelter. He would have for sure been put down since no on wanted him before. It would be extremely difficult to rehome him in his current state since it will require a costly surgery. If left untreated he will slowly lose the function of his leg (that is already happening and is apparent) and will need to be on pain medicine the rest of his life as he'll continue to develop severe arthritis.
Please help Bro be the dog he's always wanted to be and the dog he deserves to be! He deserves another chance. He wants to run and play and jump with the others but he's held back by this fixable problem. With the surgery he will be able to run and play and be a regular dog for the rest of his life. As he ages he will already have a head start on arthritis and will need standard arthritis medicine by that's a good 7-10 years down the road. We are just asking for some help to get him back on his feet, fully recovered and then we will find him a loving forever home where he can run and play and fully express his amazing personality.
Thank you for your help! I know Bro would give you big sloppy kisses if he could! :)
