On December 18, a taxi was hit by an oncoming truck in Moshi, Tanzania. It rolled rolled several times and the driver was killed. The passenger, my friend (whom I know through my work in Tanzania) and a long time friend of the driver's, survived. After release from the hospital for a dislocated shoulder and wounds, he had to walk to the tiny home of the deceased's wife and three children, ages 12, 7 and 3 months. He was the only breadwinner and they survived, as most in their community do, with what he earned day-to-day driving the taxi. He didn't own the taxi, he was an employee who worked for tips.

When my friend arrived, besides their shock and pain, he discovered that the widow has an additional problem that no one at such a time should face: she has exactly $7 to her name, and has no idea how she will continue to feed her children.

While charity is not a long-term solution and other helps must be put into place, it takes time for such things in Tanzania. There are NO social services to help her. The widow has no family other than her brother-in-law, the younger brother of the deceased. They all live in the same small structure. He, too, is extremely poor. There simply isn't anyone else to ask for help. This is how widows and orphans end up begging in the streets in their area. It is a reality and we hope to avoid that for this family.

So our aim is to raise as much money as possible so that this woman, who is grieving and in shock, can feed her children these next few months until she can try to figure out a way to survive. The 12 year old son will start school in January (their school year is reversed to ours, so the year starts then) and I'm trying to find out if he has tuition paid and shoes, books, etc. This is paid by the family in Tanzania. It is hard enough to lose your father, let alone your entire future and education. But first things first - we need to get her money for food and water.

Can you help?
