Madre de Dios, Peru: A hotbed of ecological research and environmental justice concerns, UW is taking students to study both old and emerging threats to the Amazon and its people. The intersection of public health and the environment hits close to home for me and has largely inspired my goal to become a medical doctor.

Over the last decade, a new gold rush, one which pulls gold straight from the soil itself, has led to a continuing world-class mercury disaster, while due to the area’s poverty and remoteness, the exact magnitude and nature of the impact are poorly understood. The chance to do research which could meaningfully contribute to our understanding of this environmental and humanitarian emergency was too valuable to pass up. I applied, was accepted, have been doing the preparatory work, and I leave on the 24th! (yes, of July)

I've been operating to a degree on faith that Financial Aid would cover the cost, borrowing money for the plane ticket expecting to pay it back before the trip. Of the $2198 beyond normal tuition and expenses however, they've only committed to covering $32. Obviously I'm appealing this (I can't find any rules or caps that should exclude my cost of attendance appeal), but I learned last year how unreliable they can be (I still owe a grand to the school for last quarter's tuition, and a month's rent, despite working two jobs).

So, while I don't object to being given money, I have a little free time before I leave, and will have more after I get back and I gladly offer up my labor and or brains in exchange. Thank you, everyone, for your support.
