When Amber and Jeremiah became parents on Friday February 4, 2005 their lives were forever changed when their beautiful baby girl, Alyson Elaine was born. Having a baby greatly changes a couple’s relationship and lifestyle in general; however, that is even truer when that baby has the intensive medical needs that Alyson was born with.

When Alyson was finally discharged from the hospital at 5 weeks of age, many doctors did not hold out much hope or expectation for Alyson. In fact her parents were told, in not so many words, that they may not even plan a first birthday party. Alyson has showed those doctors, as well as many others that she means business and she was placed on this earth for a reason. Alyson has battled back through many sicknesses to become an amazing blessing in her family’s life. She has spent somewhere between 6 and 8 months of her life as an inpatient in a hospital and has had 10 surgeries thus far with the 11th one planned.

She will soon be having 1-2 surgeries per year to “grow” the rods in her back until she is old enough to undergo a full fusion. It’s not always been fun, pretty, or exciting and it’s surely not been easy in more ways than one.

One major place where it is not easy is financially. Even with private insurance and Alaska Medicaid Alyson’s family spends anywhere from $150 up to $200 a month on uncompensated costs for special food items, medications, supplements, and equipment for her. At the present time they have been traveling out of state for specialized medical care twice per year. This schedule may increase in the years to come, as Alyson will have major surgery to correct her scoliosis in June of this year. She may need care by her orthopedist up to four times per year, depending on how her body responds to the instrumentation that is being put into her. A lot of their travel expenses are covered by insurance, but as with all things there are always costs that are not covered too. These costs are in addition to their everyday living expenses back at home.

Alyson’s family is facing major needs at this time with needing to relocate their family to a ranch style home (this will mean they will need a new security deposit/pet deposit as well as a month’s rent to move) and with needing to purchase a reliable wheelchair accessible vehicle. They currently rent a split level home, which will make providing for Alyson’s care very difficult as she will not be able to be carried up and down the stairs to enter/exit her home or access her therapy room or bathroom following her surgery in June. The family’s current vehicles cannot accommodate Alyson’s wheelchair safely/legally. They have access to a sum of money to purchase a new vehicle, but they have quickly learned that these kinds of vehicles cost a lot more than they ever imagined. A newer model regular family sized vehicle that accommodates a wheelchair runs anywhere between $15,000 and $40,000. They are not expecting to be able to buy a new vehicle, but they want to buy one that is likely to be reliable for some time to come, so they do not want to invest in an older one or one with high mileage, that is likely to nickel-and-dime them. Presently Alyson is transferred to a carseat to ride in the car; however, following her surgery that will no longer be possible/safe for her.

Thank you for taking the time to read about Alyson and her family’s needs. If you can assist with any amount of a donation towards these needs, please do so through this FundRazr App or through Paypal at onespecialgirl2005@gmail.com (Alyson’s Account managed by her mom). Please know that the family greatly appreciates your time and any assistance you can provide. All monies received will be used strictly to provide the above mentioned needs for this Amazing little Lady.
