my brother asked me if i would take his 17 yr old cat Newman because his wife told him to have Newman put to sleep before she got home at 4 PM because he peed a lot, sometimes not in the box, and it was smelly. when i heard that Newman was drinking excessively, peeing a lot and losing weight, i figured he might be diabetic and had my brother bring him over to my house. i tested Newman and sure enough his glucose was off the charts, over 600. i could not let a poor old cat be put to sleep, never mind for a totally treatable disease, so i took him in. i would have given anything for any of my old cats who have died over the past years to have lived longer. so i feel like i owe it to this old man. i already had what i called 'my quota' of cats, but now i guess i have one more. :) Newman is very sweet and already feeling much better with insulin and an all wet, high protein low carb diet, blood sugar way down and putting weight back on. my problem is that i am going on vacation next week and i already have to board my diabetic Cricket at the vet since she needs meds (at $20 a day for 10 days). now i am forced to also board Newman because i can't expect anyone to administer insulin twice a day in my home. this is a big blow to my finances on top of his recent $200+ vet diagnostic visit. i absolutely hate asking anyone for money, but at the same time a new $400 expense out of the blue is difficult. so many people are so happy that Newman's life was spared and that i am making him well again, so if anyone would like to help me pay for his boarding while i am away, i would be hugely grateful. the timing was unfortunate, but i am happy to do what i can for Newman so that he can live out ALL the days he was meant to live instead of having it cut short by people who turned their backs on an old friend.
