Desert Dogs Project Inc hasn't added a story.
After languishing for three weeks at the Devore Shelter, a 7-year-old Chihuahua named Penny was set to be euthanized. She was finally rescued by Desert Dogs Project Rescue , but no one knew that she had become seriously anemic, most likely due to a massive tick infestation. After leaving the shelter, Penny crashed and was rushed to the foster’s vet. He took one look at the gums and told the foster to get her immediately to an emergency hospital. He said Penny would die unless she received immediate transfusions. Penny was hospitalized for three days and received ‘round the clock care from the emergency vets, veterinary specialists, and vet techs. She was given x-rays, had various blood tests, underwent two transfusions, and received IV steroids, antibiotics, and other medications to save her life. She arrived at the emergency hospital extremely lethargic, unable to stand or walk, and with severe neurological symptoms; the prognosis was not good. Happily, after the emergency and intensive care she received, Penny was able to walk on her own (albeit “like a drunk” as her emergency doctor described) and her gums had gone from white to pink. She is now walking normally, eating enthusiastically, and has regained her perkiness.
There was never any doubt that the rescue would do whatever was necessary to save her life, but Penny’s medical emergency was an unexpected financial blow. Pledges and subsequent donations have amounted to $705, but the bill was $2049 and she still needs a follow-up exam and blood test in one week. Please donate to our fundraiser to help pay for the medical treatment that saved this delightful girl’s life.
