Hello, my name is Karyn Reid and I am running to be a Trustee on the Baldwin School Board of Education. I am stepping up so we, Baldwin, do not fall behind. If elected to be the next Baldwin Board of Education trustee, I would bring my unique relationship building skills and 20 years of experience as an educator to the table so I can assist with helping to move the Baldwin School District in a forward direction in positive manner.

When my husband and I relocated to New York from Illinois, we landed in Laurelton, a part of Queens, New York. We were okay with living there until my son became school aged. My husband and I were concerned about my son’s education and surroundings. We wanted him to grow up in a diverse neighborhood, and we did not want to have to go through the rigmarole of having to hope that we were chosen from the lottery to get into the neighborhood school that was “the best school." We chose to relocate to Baldwin.

I have not been disappointed. My son, who is finishing his senior year at Baldwin High School, has had some wonderful opportunities and has done quite well. However, I am very concerned for his sister, her friends and the rest of the children following behind my son.

With the increasing cost of doing business and with the state year after year giving school districts less state aid, the Baldwin School District has had to make some very difficult decisions which has forced the district to make cuts that feels like we are moving in a backward direction. The cuts that have been made concern me as Baldwin has been known for having a stellar fine art and music program, competitive sports teams and a variety of course offerings. Having all of this available to our children prepares them for adulthood and helps them to obtain scholarships for college or other post high school training programs. In addition, having a strong school system is critical to having a viable community. While I believe that our school district should be financially prudent and only have programs and activities in place that we can afford, I also believe that we need to keep looking toward the future and plan accordingly. And we need to figure out how to do this in a constructive manner so we can continue to move forward.
