Lucky and Jasper 2009 - 2014

Lucky and Jasper were the first Meerkats to be hand reared here at Hoo Farm. They were abandoned when only a few hours old by the mob as their parents were not the alpha pair. They had to be kept warm and fed on milk every 2 hours for the first 3 weeks of life and still needed constant care up for many months after. At the time we were the only establishment other than London Zoo to succesfully hand rear Meerkats from such a young age.

Both Lucky and Jasper went on to live a life giving joy to many people through our Meerkat Experiences. This was an activity both of them (especially Jasper) thrived on. They loved human companionship and looked forward to the love and cuddles they were given each day.

Devestatingly, both Lucky and Jasper passed away 5 days apart from each other in January 2014. The cause of death was indetermined but it is suggested that an acute airborn virus was to blame. Their deaths have left a huge hole in the lives and hearts of all of their keepers, especially Will and Becky who were with Jasper when he passed away.

On Jaspers death we received over 100 messages through Facebook, Twitter and Email from customers who felt just as upset as we did and although this will never bring them back, it has been hugely comforting to know how much of an impact they had in life.

We have therefore chosen to set up this page, in their name. Through this page, we will be occasionally asking for donations towards some of our many projects that we cannot fund ourselves. Anybody who donates will have their names added to a large plaque on the outside of the particular enclosure they have helped towards. We do not expect much, but even if you could give 1p, it would move us 1p closer towards that goal.

Fittingly, we have felt it is only right that the first project we ask for help towards is a new Meerkat enclosure. Occasionally, we get baby Meerkats in the same position that Lucky and Jasper were in and we are in desperate need for an enclosure to house them when they get older. This enclosure will be located down near the other Meerkat enclosures, so although they could never be introduced, they can smell and hear others of their kind nearby.

Thank you.
