Nichole Gregory hasn't added a story.
Blake is a 20 year old college student that suffered a Grade 5 Liver Laceration while playing club football at Longwood University on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. What was thought to be just a hard blow to the abdomen during a normal footbal tackle, turned out to be a life threatening injury requiring multiple surgeries, an initial 34 day hospital stay with 2 more separate hospital stays to follow, withdrawal from college and the inability to most things on his own. That is A LOT for anyone to go through!!
To give more detail about the injury and the journey...
This all started when Blake took a hit playing in a football game at L.U.! 1 ambulance ride, 1 CAT scan, and 1 helicopter ride transfer to VCU in Richmond,Va because Blake had a severely lacerated liver! At the time, we had only a small idea of how life threatening and extensive his injury was and would continue to be...
We were told there was a lot of blood around his abdomen but, he didn't show any signs of more bleeding & no other damage. He was stable, but at VERY high risk for infection, so he would stay in ICU for a while. After 6 days in ICU, he was transferred to a regular room and we all thought the worst was behind us! Days went by and he just started feeling worse! They did several procedures and small surgeries that were only failed efforts to correct the loss of blood from the liver. Blake had to be rushed back to ICU where he had yet another procedure in an attempt to get rid of some of the excess fluid & bile. It was not as successful as they had hoped & started causing more pain. Blake's blood levels have started to get worse too. AND, Blake had lost and astonishing 25 pounds at this point!
ALL of these things were just NOT HELPING! Blake and family were growing more & more upset, frazzled and discouraged!!
As a result, Blake was transferred to the liver transplant unit & on Halloween, 25 days after entering the hospital underwent major surgery on his liver where they took out the right lobe of his liver and cleaned everything out all of the bacteria and infection that was festering in his organs. The amount of recovery time will be considerable!!!
Kids shouldn't have to go through these sorts of things. Parents should never have to hear there is no other plan for their child if a surgery does not work. But, it happens! We choose to believe that we will be stronger people through this trauma and God never gives us more than can be handled!
While Blake and his family have been blessed with prayers and support from family and friends, many bills are rolling in fast and financial help is needed. It is with great humility your help is requested and we ask that you send this page out to as many people, businesses and contacts you can think of to help too!!
