Austin Geoffrey Born: April 11, 2012 6 pounds, 14 ounces and 21 inches long (approx) Austin's parents had no clue that little Austin had so many problems. The pregnancy was completely normal (full term), but little did they know. Austin was born with breathing issues and his legs were hyper-extended and feet rested on top of his shoulders (like he was bent in half). His arms were also very stiff. The day after delivery, he was transferred down to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles in hopes of answers from the many specialist doctors that awaited his arrival. After evaluation, they also found that he was not able to swallow or suck. Genetic testing, MRIs, EEGs, EKGs, x-rays, ultrasounds.....test after test came back normal. Physical and occupational therapists have worked with his legs, arms and jaw on a daily basis and although the limbs have completely healed and have full range of motion (praise God!), his jaw/swallowing has not improved. His diagnosis is “there is no diagnosis”. Austin was next scheduled for a muscle biopsy and a feeding tube. After the surgery, the doctors sat down with Austin’s parents and told them the heartbreaking reality. Austin was not getting better. He was starting to have events where he would stop breathing and his heart rate would drop for no reason. They suspect severe issues with the central nervous system as well as a degenerative muscle disease, but so far it’s just guesses. With this news, Austin’s parents decided it was time to bring him home for his remaining time (on hospice). Austin has 3 big sisters (ages 5 ½, 3 ½, and 2) that are very excited to meet him for the first time when he comes home (currently scheduled for June 20). Although they have no idea what to expect in regards to Austin’s time (and we are still praying for a miracle), they are going to live it fully, together as a family. Everyone who has heard Austin’s story has asked how they can help.....Austin’s Aunt and Uncle have set up this donation site to help with his very expensive medical bills and home health care. Any help you can give would be wonderful! Please continue praying. We’d also like to give a huge THANKS to Austin’s family, friends, church and MOPS for their support and help with travel, watching his big sisters, meals and prayers.
