Due to an overwhelming amount of use, our jail phone line has been pushed past capacity and needs extra funds. This line provides inmates with critical support and is the backbone of our organizing. We need your help to amplify prisoners' voices!

Support comes first...

Stories from South Central is first and foremost a power-building campaign for prisoners affected by the MCHM spill this January—but part of amplifying voices is providing baseline support for those who need it. The friends and family of prisoners pay exorbitant rates (up to $3.00/call) to accept phone calls from within the jail, and are often unable to afford them. That is why we maintain a phone line and take inmate calls at all hours of the day, allowing us to facilitate communication between prisoners and their loved ones, attorneys, parole offices and more. These basic services are absolutely essential to meeting our larger goal of organizing for better conditions, and has a significant effect on the lives of more than fifty inmates.

...and that's where you come in.

Over the past month, the number of prisoners we talk to regularly has skyrocketed, and our funding has dried up exceptionally quickly. These callers are important—they mean we have more letters to publicize poor conditions, more signatures on our petition, and fewer people languishing in jails and prisons without outside help—but it also means a higher cost for us. Although we have plans for more sustainable sources of funding, interim funding is sorely needed for inmates who have court dates coming up and no other way to access critical information.

We don't need much for our work to continue

Our phone bill amounts to a few hundred dollars per week; if we can raise $1000, we can fund our phone lines for five more weeks before alternative sources of funding come in. $2000, and we can also afford gas to continue our regular visits with prisoners. If we meet our $3000 goal, our bills for next month are paid and we can focus on what is most important: justice for prisoners everywhere.

We ask that you pitch in what you can so these prisoners can maintain basic levels of human dignity (or as close as you can get to that while in prison), and speak out against the inhumane conditions they face. Whether whether you can give $5, $500 or $2000, we need your help to continue to build power within prisons and work toward a society that doesn't put its people in cages.
