Lauren Kuchenbrod hasn't added a story.
Oz hates thunder. Oz hates horses on TV. Oz hates the vacuum cleaner. But even more than all of those things, Oz hates cancer. Specifically, he hates lymphoma.
Oz is a 5-year-old Rottweiler who has been in our family since he was 6 weeks old. He came to us full of worms and starving for attention. An 8 lb fluffball that cried so badly for attention that we took turns sleeping on the bathroom floor so that he wouldn't hyperventilate in his crate.
When Oz was a year old, our daughter was born. Literally a year old. Their birthdays are a day apart. He became a loyal babysitter.
When Oz was just shy of his second birthday, he ruptured his ACL and needed a TPLO. It never dampened his spirits.
Roughly a week ago, he started showing gastrointestinal symptoms. Then he started to lose his energy. After a week of medications and diet changes, we got more aggressive with tests to get a diagnosis. Bloodwork showed his liver was failing. X-rays and ultrasounds showed enlarged lymph nodes in his abdomen as well as his neck, shoulders, and groin. A few days later, the lymph node aspiration came back with our biggest fear: Lymphoma.
Sadly, Oz isn't going to beat this. Without treatment, he has weeks to live. With chemotherapy, he has 9 months. Maybe more, if he's lucky. Maybe less. But with all the love and loyality he has shown us, we feel that we have an obligation to give him the highest quality of life possible.
Chemotherapy has already started (June 18th) . A consult with an oncologist at the Veterinary College helped tailor the best cocktail of drugs given his specific situation. He's looking at 16-19 weeks of treatment (every week for the first 8, then every-other week).
My goal for sharing here is to help lighten the financial burden as we focus on making him as comfortable as possible. We're already $1500 in (the treatments and tests leading up to his diagnosis), and the chemotherapy itself (along with necessary medications, exams, and bloodwork) will run an additional $1500-2200. We're also changing him to a homemade high protein/moderate fat/low carbohydrate diet to minimize tumor growth. Feeding a Rottweiler that way isn't cheap.
We love this crazy dog. And he loves us, unconditionally. Nothing makes him happier than a good butt scratch and a spot at the end of our bed. We owe him this.
Any donation you can give is greatly appreciated, as are any positive thoughts you can send our way. <3
