If this notice is being sent to you, you are considered to be a friend of the Tordoff family. On behalf of Richelle, Gunnar, and Ripley, I am reaching out for some help in whatever form you can offer. Despite approximately 75 appointments with an array of professions (neurologists, neurosurgeons, psychologists, chiropractors, etc.) from here to Toronto, no "fix" for Gunnar's condition has been found. For those of you that don't know or have unanswered questions...here is the update: On January 8, 2012, Gunnar had a "routine" injury during a hockey game. And so the journey began. Initially thought to be his second concussion of the season, his physical condition did not progress as expected. After two weeks his concussion symptoms were gone but Gunnar continued to experience neck pain, and his neck muscles were tense and causing his head to remain in a downward position. The treatments attempted did not resolve this problem. Gunnar began to have uncontrolled muscle spasms in his shoulders. He has had several diagnoses that have not panned out. The current working theory is "Regional Pain Syndrome." This basically means that his body is sending the wrong message between his brain and muscles. This neurological confusion is telling him that he is still in pain and injured. The numerous treatments (chiropractic, physical therapy, acupuncture, nerve blocks, botox injections, medications) and traveling to doctors are starting to drain the family's resources. Richelle has exhausted her sick days and now loses money for days she misses. Now hunched over, in constant pain, and with neck spasms occurring between 120-180 times a minute, Gunnar has lost much of his independence and mobility. He is using a cane due to balance issues and has had several falls. Gunnar needs to drink from a straw because everything he holds splashes from the severe spasms. He needs help getting his shirt on. All aspects of his life have been radically changed. He hasn't been able to attend school since the day of the injury and can only tolerate small periods of instruction. Most of all, he misses his passion: HOCKEY! Gunnar's goal is to regain his strength and find his way back to his previous typical, 14 (almost 15!) year old life, including getting back on the ice. With the help of the Cleveland Clinic Pediatric & Adolescent Pain Rehabilitation Program, we are hoping that Gunnar will finally be on a path to recovery. He recently toured and was accepted into the program and is currently waiting for insurance approval. The program is 2 weeks inpatient and at least 1 week outpatient. The family will have expenses that are not covered by insurance. So many people have asked how they can help. First, please continue your prayers! All of the positive energy and good thoughts being sent his way are helping. Gunnar needs to know what a huge support system he has: message or friend him on fb, send a card, give a call. He will have access to his online account while in the Cleveland Clinic. Second, many people have offered to donate money to help meet Gunnar's needs and to help the family financially during this time. Any remaining monies will be donated to youth hockey in WNY and Regional Pain Syndrome research and treatment. If you have any questions you can contact me through facebook or call me 716-361-7851. Finally, I just want to thank everyone for taking the time to read this, and for reaching out and offering support to my dear friends. Thank you for helping Gunnar to reach his goal! -Gunnar's "Other Mother" (Anita)
