I never would have thought that at the age of 54 I would have the opportunity to be representing Canada at the World Masters Weightlifting Championships this September in Finland.

In 2012 I found the sport of CrossFit when I was going through some challenging times.  I quickly fell in love with the workouts, the movements and most importantly the community.  The competitor in me came out and I started doing small local competitions leading to even bigger competitions.  It pushed me to be a better athlete and a stronger person - physically and mentally.  I also found an extended community outside my home CrossFit gym.  I have made some lifelong friends across the province.

In 2023, I decided to focus on weightlifting to take a "break" from CrossFit.  I loved the technical aspect of lifting and the fact that my lifts were getting better and heavier.  Once again, my competitive nature took over and I won the Ontario Provincial Championships and Canadian National Championships in 2023 setting Canadian records for my age and weight class. I also found another community with my team in Kitchener and in those that I competed with provincially and nationally.  Community has been the best part of both CrossFit and Weightlifting for me and the part that keeps me going.

I'm excited and honoured to be representing Canada in Finland this September.  While weightlifting has been around for several years, there is very little funding for athletes in Canada and no funding at all for Master's Athletes like myself.  I am reaching out to my community to help support me on the Road to Worlds as I make a run for Master's Gold.
