Help support SEEDs scholarships!
SEEDs (Self-esteem,Empowerment and Education through Dance) is an internationally recognized after school program, established in 2001 to provide teen girls with a rich education in bellydance and culture while promoting self-discovery and self-actualization through high-level mentorship, journaling, community presentations and dance.
THE PROGRAM
Based on Pomagranate SEEDS by Myra Krien (a program which has seen a high level of success in Santa Fe and in other communities in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico), Brattleboro SEEDs is a place where teens will dance, build self-esteem, confidence, and community!
Brattleboro SEEDs will accept 10 teen girls (15-19 yrs old) in the Brattleboro area for 8 weeks of after-school classes, 2 hours each, one time per week starting in November of 2015. Students will be taught the elements of Tribal Style belly dance, a rich, diverse, artistic dance form.
Students will also participate in talking circles and journal writing during which they discuss important issues affecting them.
We'll bring in guest speakers to cover a wide range of topics from nutrition and body awareness to financial education, etc. As the program grows, we'll invite successful women from a variety of fields that interest the girls to come and speak to our group.
THE FACILITATORS
The program will be run by Kelsey Eaton and Devan Moran, local Brattleboro residents who are passionate about empowering young women. Kelsey has been teaching dance for more than five years, and she traveled to Santa Fe to complete her SEEDs teacher training with excellence in June 2015 with esteemed professional dancer and life coach, Myra Krien. Working alongside her is Devan Moran, an experienced local women's advocate and youth worker.
No dance experience necessary!
Students do not need to have any dance experience to join SEEDs. In this after school mentorship program, students will learn and practice Tribal style bellydance (plus bellydance culture & history), participate in talking circles, journal, enjoy guest speakers from our community, and become empowered to take an active role in a healthy body, mind, and spirit, all within the context of a supportive community of women.
Girls are not selected based on physical ability or conventional standards of "beauty". All self identified females are welcome to join us.
Students will participate in one student salon at the end of the program, where they will share their dance in a relaxed environment with family and friends!
Our goals for each girl in the program:
- Provide them with a high level of mentorship
- To have better self-esteem and confidence
- Give them an opportunity to learn a unique new skill, feel a sense of achievement and self worth
- Provide them with a safe space where they can discuss important issues
- Give each girl a nurturing environment to explore their identity
- Learn valuable skills for adulthood, preparing them for independence
- To find her own voice and be able to listen to it
- To be able to plan and achieve goals, generate choices, create options, resources and support.
- To have respect, appreciation and be able to care for her own body
- To respect, appreciate and be able to care for others in community
- To respect, appreciate and be able to care for other women, rather than see them as competition
- To respect and appreciate diversity and culture
Your donation will help cover the cost of:
- Scholarships for 3 students (this includes journals, a hip scarf, a dance top, and 8 weeks of participation in the program)
Cost to participate in the program is $120 per student, but because we believe that this program can make such a difference in the lives of each girl, no one will be turned away for inability to pay.
This fundraiser will help us gather funds to meet the need expected in this offering, and we're so thankful for your thoughtful donation!
"Not only did I learn to bellydance but SEEDs saved my life"--Pomegranate SEEDs graduate, Santa Fe, NM.
