Joseph Zanetti hasn't added a story.
The Badjao are the poorest ethnic group in the Philippines and traditionally known as sea nomads who live in boats and stilt houses along the shoreline. Their history is vague and full of myth, which makes them misunderstood to this day. They are one of the gentlest tribes in Southeast Asia. Most members of the tribe are illiterate and lack proper documentation of their births and this makes them an easy target for marginalization.
My name is Joseph Zanetti and I have been working with the Badjao here in Davao since 2011. Initially I had a feeding program for the children each Sunday afternoon. It did not take long to realize that lack of education and illiteracy was a major issue within the Badjao community. To address this problem I started a learning center for the children in the Spring of 2013 in their village at Isla Verde located in Davao City. Unfortunately on April 4, 2014 a fire swept through the village and destroyed everything in its path including the learning center. The children and their families are currently living in makeshift shelters in nearby Magsaysay Park and are in need of permanent shelter as soon as possible.
We are in immediate need of funds to rebuild not only the learning center, but more importantly the homes of the children and the families who are connected to the learning center. This project would entail providing new homes for 42 families which are made up of 212 people. The Badjao live in stilt houses along the sea that are made of coconut lumber and bamboo. Fortunately the cost to build these types of houses is quite low. Depending on the size of the family a house can be built for between 8-15,000 pesos. ($185-$340) A structure suitable for the learning center can be built for around 45,000 pesos. ($1,050) The cost to equip the learning center, replace the books, desks, and other supplies will cost an additional 85,000 pesos ($2,000)
The total cost for this project will be around 620,000 pesos ($14,500)
The Badjao have a difficult time earning enough money to support their families under normal conditions, much less during difficult times such as the ones they find themselves in today. Without your help they will have a very hard time rebuilding their lives. I hope to raise enough to cover the cost of this entire project so that the children can get back into the routine of learning, however, if there is not enough for the entire project, priority will be on rebuilding the lost homes and getting these families out of the park.
More information on the learning center can be found on my Facebook Page as well as the Page for the center.
