Firebird Youth Theater is a branch of the recently founded Firebird Project, an initiative striving to create an artistic outlet for homeschooled children and teens in NYC. The cast of every production consists entirely of homeschooled kids and teens in the NYC area, and is also teen-directed.

This May, FYT is putting on Expresso, an original two-act comedy by Leo and Pavel Lion. This is FYT's second production, following in the footsteps of "Down the Chocolate River and Beyond" (based on the work of Roald Dahl) performed in an off-Broadway theater in the Spring of 2013. The show filled the house for five nights in a row, and was adored by audiences of all ages.

Expresso tells the story of a business threatened by the looming monopolistic powers and the state of the economy. Through unforgettable characters and hilarious writing, Lion and Lion have crafted a world that is still holding onto hope. The piece takes place in a local independent coffee-shop trying desperately to stay in business after a "Sckubrats" opens up across the street. Hilarity ensues as the employees of Brown Coffee House, often eccentric and misguided, all scramble to get business booming again and rid their area of the corporate plague.

Expresso goes up the weekend of May 2nd, in an off-Broadway venue, the Roy Arias Theater (coincidentally 2 blocks away from where we performed Down The Chocolate River) We have a deadline due to pay the theater $1100 for rent by March 20th. Along with other expenses, such as set construction and set transportation, the goal adds up to $1400 by March 19th. All the actors are so excited for this production, as are the rest of us at Firebird Youth Theater! We have a few fundraising plans in the works, but we're going to need all the help we can get. Any donation is greatly appreciated, no matter how small. So please, help support Firebird Youth Theater, so together we can make this production happen for the homeschooled youth - and the theater-going audience - of New York.
