Heart worm positive dogs are on death row in Aiken County . Aiken Shelter Animals Advocates provides short term fostering for rescues who save dogs from Aiken County Animal Shelter, a high kill shelter in rural South Carolina. The rescues normally cover the cost. Unfortunately, HW positive dogs, many of whom are highly adoptable otherwise, are put on the euthanasia list, UNLESS a qualified 501c3 rescue offers to pull them. We generally have 2-3 days to try and save them. However, the rescues we work with up north rarely will take HW positive dogs as it is illegal to even bring HW pos dogs to many states. Usually a southern rescue that helps the heartworm positive dogs cannot afford to pay for food or transport. We work  to raise funds for treatment. The treatment funds (generally $500) go directly to the rescue which pulls the  dog.The funds that are raised for individual dogs go to the treatment and the monthly aftercare of the pups with heartworms. When it comes to transport it falls on our group to scrape up funds for fuel, food, and flea medicine. If you can help with transport or fostering, contact us. If you cant but would still like to help, please consider donating a few bucks to our Heart Beat Goes On Campaign.
