Erika and Misty have joined efforts with two other students in a collaborative study beginning THIS WEEK, 3/8/13 at Antioch University LA.
We have strategically created the entire course, interviewed and been interviewed by professors on the details of the study, and been approved to embark, a high honor indeed!
The course itself will give us experience in a field which could apply to a variety of uses including; application of data to social and environmental justice, urban sustainability, community outreach and educational models for diversity inclusiveness in a fresh new way.
The class requires experiential learning in the ocean including deep ocean dives. Everything is supported under the academic umbrella EXCEPT the cost of our diving license and we need your help!
Two of the students have fortunately received private funding, and we are looking to complete the circle by way of our community, friends, and family so that we may begin diving class with our colleagues shortly. Anything and everything helps.
In return, you will be cordially invited to our yearly Showcase at AULA, which our project, even in its beginning stages, has been nominated to display work in.
You will also be able to receive photos, updates, and even a copy of our final analysis and project should you like!
Our diving expeditions will include but not be limited to Catalina Island, and the kelp forests off the coast of San Pedro, so the photos and data collection are sure to be outstanding. Catalina Island and the Kelp forests here are among the most renown in the world.
Every supporter will have mention on the blog, and have an opportunity to engage with us along the way, share your thoughts and spread knowledge of our amazing ocean to regular everyday folks who simply aren't in tune with the academic language. We will specifically question and study the "queerer" things about the marine, including species that combat our knowledge of gender and the interconnectivity of us to them.
For more information on the class, or to connect to our blog as it develops at www.queeroceans.wordpress.com
Thank you so much in advance for your kind thoughts, support and love. This project is a once in a lifetime opportunity for a small group of committed students who, a short time ago, never thought we would have this opportunity together.
On behalf of the entire course participants, our consulting Professor, and the communities which will be impacted by our work, we thank you for your contribution and support!

“There's nothing wrong with enjoying looking at the surface of the ocean itself, except that when you finally see what goes on underwater, you realize that you've been missing the whole point of the ocean. Staying on the surface all the time is like going to the circus and staring at the outside of the tent.”
