Guatemala City is one of the most impoverished areas in Central America with some of the poorest living and working in the city garbage dump scavenging for things to sell. I began working last month with Safe Passage, a non-profit organization working in Guatemala City that brings education and opportunity to the children and families living in extreme poverty around the City's garbage dump. The program includes approximately 550 children, ranging in age from 2 to 21 years, coming from nearly 300 families in the surrounding neighborhoods. Unfortunately, like most non-profits they can't afford to offer much pay for their volunteers as they are always seeking donations to fund the program. And as I see my living expenses quickly running up and my savings quickly running out, the reality has become that I might not be able to continue volunteering with Safe Passage if I don't have money to support myself. That's why I'm here asking for any kind of help that you can give. By supporting my ability to continue living in Guatemala for the next six months, you are also supporting the education of these incredible kids that I have gotten to know who deserve a good education like everyone else.
