What is it like to live with a half-grown child who can’t speak, who frequently erupts in violent tantrums, and spends hours making hand shadows or stripping shrubs? How do her parents try to bring her out of her private world? How do they keep their sanity and preserve their love for her, for each other, or for their other five children

One of us answers these questions by tracing the first Three years in the life of my Daughter, Donna, who has severe autism.

Autism is a developmental disorder affecting language acquisition and use, behavior, and social interaction. Some autistic people can’t talk. Others speak easily. Some do odd things like rocking their bodies and flapping their hands. Others stay perfectly still. Some autistic's have unpredictable temper tantrums. Others have less obvious problems like difficulty making friends.

Donna story

My name is Donna Harrington I am 3 years old and I am 1 out of 6 children and this is my story. On October 24, 2012 I was diagnosed with autism, I see the looks on my parents faces everyday knowing that I am unable to communicate and how hard it is to understand me, I know how frustrating it is for both the family and I to tell them what I need every day. It’s kind of like being in a country where only you speak English and there is no way to communicate. Also I hear that an iPad is the best solution for children with autism to communicate and learn, my parents have tried very hard to get me an iPad but they had no luck. I would very much appreciate it if you could donate anything even a dollar towards an iPad to help me communicate. Thank You so very much for your time and god bless you all!
