Welcome to the De-Fence Fund! (click photo for video) If you’ve found your way here, you are likely aware of our prolonged ordeal with our landlord, the Union of Northern Workers (UNW). Thank you for your interest and support! Who are we? We, Michele LeTourneau, Annemieke Mulders, Kathryn Carriere and Gerri S, are residential tenants of the UNW’s building on 52nd Street. The UNW has enmeshed us in a legal battle. We managed this situation ourselves, without legal representation, for seven (7) months. This will continue long into the fall until the UNW’s appeal is heard in the Supreme Court of the Northwest Territories. Why donations? Supporters of our position, that access (read: safe AND usable) is a provision of our rental agreements and our rights as tenants, have noted that we are now mired in convoluted legalese and gruelling legal procedures. Several have donated funds. They want to help. We want to create an easy and safe way to do so. (Many want or need to remain anonymous. We respect that, and this method allows for anonymity.) What's this about? Long story short: The west side street access to our apartment was closed off a few years ago. In March 2011, the east side access was closed due to 1600 litres of Aurora Village’s fuel bleeding into the ground. Essentially, street access to the back of the building, where both doors up to our apartment are located, has been cut off. The UNW refuses to open up the fenced off west-side access, despite three orders from the Rental Office to do so. In fact, they have now taken all three orders to the Supreme Court by way of an appeal. Kathryn’s order remains enforceable – but no-one will enforce it. Michele and Annemieke’s orders have been stayed several times because the UNW continues to insist that they have every intention of providing street access. We hope to raise $5000 to help towards the cost of legal representation. Thank you!
