This summer I will be spending 4 weeks volunteering alongside twenty other teachers from Teach First running Limited Resource Teacher Training workshops for local Ugandan Maths teachers with Volunteer Uganda and its partner charity Inspiring Futures. These workshops are free for the teachers, and provide training which is otherwise practically impossible for them to access. The money will be spent in Uganda and goes on providing transport and food to the teachers on the course. Teachers would normally be farming during the summer and so will be paid around £3-4 a day to ensure that they can afford to attend. Anything that I raise will go towards the costs of the programme. None of it is for my personal expenses. I have previously worked as a volunteer teacher abroad during my gap year and although it was a very valuable experience for me, it arguably had little to no long term impact on those I worked with. However, I strongly believe that by working with Volunteer Uganda to provide free training to local Ugandan teachers, I will be supporting the charity in making a longer-term and sustainable impact on the education and welfare of children in the area. Over the past ten years the work carried out by VU and its partner charity, Inspiring Futures has helped transform the lives of local people through making a really incredible difference to the education and welfare of children in Uganda. For more information please see http://volunteeruganda.org/teach-first Any amount however small will go directly towards covering the costs of the programme. £5 would enable one teacher to attend for 1 day. I know that we all receive lots of requests for charitable donations and I fully understand if you feel that you have already done your bit for charity this year.
