On Tuesday, August 15th, Chicago Police arrested Tom Rainey at an anti-fascist protest outside a courthouse where a known white supremacist was facing charges for stabbing two people at a Dropkick Murphys concert on Northerly Island.

Help Tom fight his case

For the last 35 years, Tom Rainey has been organizing with anti-racist movements from Chicago to San Francisco. From the anti-apartheid to Black Lives Matter movements, Tom has been on the front lines in the fight for racial justice. Over the years Tom has published articles, organized panels, educational campaigns & demonstrations.

Now, Tom is being falsely accused of aggravated battery to a peace officer and resisting arrest. Tom is on house arrest with a $250,000 bond. These false charges are the result of a brutal police overreaction to a small peaceful assembly protesting White Supremacy three days after the tragic events in Charlottesville.

What Can Happen If Tom Is Convicted?

Tom is facing a Class 2 felony aggravated battery charge. If Tom were to be wrongfully convicted of this charge, he could be sentenced to serve three to seven years in prison.

What You Can Do

We are asking you to contribute to Tom’s defense fund and bail fund. In order to mount an effective defense, Tom’s lawyers, legal workers, and defense team will have to attend numerous court dates, conduct an extensive investigation, and potentially hire experts to debunk the state’s claim of assault on a police officer “using his hands and hips". A $25,000 bond is currently required to release Tom from house arrest.

We are also asking people call Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s office and  request that her office drop the criminal charges against Tom and the other two people arrested on August 15 at the Cook County Municipal Court at Belmont and Western. Calls can be made to 312-603-1880 .
