Maternal and Neonatal Outreach Services (MANOS) is going back to Nicaragua to further our work!
A little history: For the last two years, we assisted in promoting and supporting lactation education in Nicaragua's central teaching hospital in an old pueblo called Leon. Nicaragua is the most resource challenged country in Central America. Breastfeeding has been shown to save lives, especially in developing countries. However, formula companies along with national politics have had negative impacts on breastfeeding success. We will return to the hospital in Leon to evaluate their breastfeeding promotion program that emerged as a result of our previous trainings. New Trainings: This spring, the nurses of MANOS went to Washington, DC, to become trainers of Helping Babies Breath (HBB), HBB, an initiative of World Health Organization and American Academy of Pediatrics, is a neonatal resuscitation curriculum designed for community health workers in resource limited areas. Studies show that with the implementation of these very simple steps, many newborn lives could be saved. About Us: We are nurses, mothers, and teachers who are passionate about Maternal-Child Health. We have all been extensively trained to assist mothers establish and maintain successful breastfeeding relationships with their infants. As Obstetrical Nurses, we are also specialized teachers of Helping Babies Breath, an initiative of the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics. We all speak Spanish and have traveled extensively. We are excited to bring our skills back to Nicaragua!
What we did: In Leon, Nicaragua: We developed a curriculum based on the World Health Organization material, and taught lengthy interactive courses in 2012 and 2013. This course was conducted in Spanish to groups of playful, committed and intelligent hospital staff (each class had approximately fifty doctors and nurses in attendance). Our courses served as part of a reinvigorated national commitment to breastfeeding and the improved health and well being of Nicaragua's mothers and babies. We also worked with the staff of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to help them establish a "lactario": a quiet, safe and comfortable place where a mother can either pump or breastfeed her baby. We assisted in the purchase of a refrigerator for storing pumped breastmilk, and furniture for maternal comfort. In Metagalpa, Nicaragua: We brought our services, and much needed supplies to La Casa Materna (Maternal House) where poor women from rural areas stay during their third trimester of pregnancy. La Casa provides a loving, safe place where women receive support, community, excellent nutrition, education, clean water and quick access to the hospital when their baby is ready to be born. Our Next Trip:
Joining with Global Partners-Nicaragua for the first leg of our journey, we will travel with health care providers from Gundersten Heatlh System in LaCrosse Wisconsin, and teach Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) to the health workers and midwives that deliver babies in the mountains of Metagalpa, Nicaragua. We will also hold a training at La Casa Materna, where we visited in 2013, and continue to build relationship with that organization. After Metagalpa, we will then travel to Leon, Nicaragua, to follow up with the hospital and staff where we taught our classes and set up the "lactario" in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This visit will provide follow up to our courses, and evaluate the effectiveness of our trainings within the facility.
Fundraising: In efforts to raise money for our educational materials, breastfeeding supplies and medical equipment, we are actively seeking donations to help us support our work. We will hold a
