I've been working with Norwegian Refufgee Council (NRC) In Goma, North Kivu, DRC since the beginning of November. I just arrived back in the US last Sunday and I need a way to get back over to the Congo. I work with NRC's Education department, aiding the Education Manager in everything from admin activities, translating, writing, and editing reports, reviewing budgets, conducting field evaluations, and visiting schools. Those of you who know me understand I have a heart for Congo and would like to return as soon as possible. Everytime I return home, I  immediately launch into a new project designed to get me back over. This time I could really use your help! I do not have the money to pay for my flights back over. With holiday prices, I just need to raise $3000 to pay for my flights and then I can resume my work with NRC.

Some facts about education:

- Half of the world’s out-of-school children live in conflict-affected areas –  that number is somewhere around 28,500,000

- School’s provide safety for children: According to local community leaders, parents, and children themselves, education provides an alternative to joining/being forced to join the conflict and reduces the risk of sexual violence

- Education projects receive only 1.4% of global humanitarian funding - NRC is one of the only humanitarian organizations that has an education sector

- There are 2.7 million people displaced IN the DRC (excluding over 500,000 that are refugees in surrounding countries)

- The conflict last year resulted in over 500 schools in North Kivu being occupied, looted, or destroyed

I will be working with NRC to directly counter these statistics. Working in this department provides an actual solution to many of the atrocities committed in Eastern Congo, not merely an instant 'band-aid'

I would like nothing more than to be back in the DRC working with NRC and the children it assists

(If you are interested in tracking some of my daily activities from when I was there, I blogged about my experiences. You can read these here: http://alannakennedy10.wordpress.com )
