Little reported in the west, in June 2013, devastating monsoon flooding struck the state of Uttarakhand in the Indian Himalayas and killed up to 10,000 people. This disaster occurred at the height of the annual pilgrimage season to Hindu shrines located in remote areas at high elevations. Thousands of businesses, roads, and homes were destroyed.

The most devastating long-term consequence of the flooding is the loss of livelihood by the great number of the region's inhabitants who worked in the tourism and pilgrimage industries in the area. Largely migrants from surrounding villages who relocated to tourist towns to earn money for their familes, these individuals have lost everything, including the ability to earn an income. There is little prospect of the economy being rebuilt anytime soon. Unemployment is rampant, many children no longer have schools to attend, and poverty is reaching critical levels. On January 2 I will arrive at my research site, the city of Uttarkashi, one of the hardest hit areas, to see my many friends and associates who have been affected by the flooding. My relationship with the people of Uttarkashi extends back more than a decade, and I have been warmly welcomed and assisted by their generosity and hospitality many times over. My closest friends are social activists and employees of NGOs and relief agencies. In addition to the personal funds we will contribute, I intend to deliver all the money I collect through this campaign directly to organizations I can personally verify are effectively assisting victims reestablish their lives, I will spend two weeks in Uttarkashi, and as possible I will update you on the conditions I find.

Every rupee I deliver will go directly to relief; none to administrative overhead or incidental expenses. Your money will be very well spent. Please help.
