Commander Mitch Shipley USN (ret.) has been chasing a dream for 25 years, all while raising three wonderful boys and serving his country for over 30 years in submarines and submarine related research. That dream? To compete for the United States in the World Hang Gliding Championships. His time is now, January 2013 in Forbes Australia and you can help. Competition hang gliding is a personal passion sport. No big sponsors. No huge prize dollars. Mitch spent over $7000 of his own money last January to go to Forbes and compete in the pre-World Championship meet – where he took a respectable 18th out of 100 of the world’s best pilots. That, and competing in all four of the 2012 US National meets, qualified him to be on the six man and two woman US National Hang Gliding Hang Gliding Team. It also qualified him to be deep in debt. In pursuing this dream Mitch left more traditional employment in 2010 to become the lead flight instructor at Quest Air flight park in Groveland FL. Not exactly a high paying position, but a position that three previous US National Champions held. You only get good in “the 3-D chess game of surfing the invisible waves” by doing it and doing it a lot! In this quest Mitch also has bought all the top of the line flight gear at his own expense. Some $15K of personal expense. Add in the expense to travel to all the qualifying competitions and you get the picture. So if somewhere in your heart there is a soft spot for people who worked hard all their life in the more conventional life of service and then took the giant leap for their personal dream, help send Mitch to compete for your US Hang Gliding National Team!
