Dave Chandrasekaran hasn't added a story.
Every year I dedicate my birthday to an important social justice cause. For the big 4-0, it will be in support of frontline efforts to support immigrants and refugees being held in detention at the southern border. And your donation also counts as your "ticket" for my huge birthday bash fundraiser on January 19th 9pm - 3am at Ten Tigers in Petworth, featuring tasty internationally-inspired cocktails, a lineup of kick ass DJs, live performances, and a host of other shenanigans! Even if you don't live in DC or can't make it in person on the 19th, I still invite you to donate as part of this month-ling campaign to support immigrant families.
Your donations will support the Dilley Pro Bono Project (DPBP), a program of the American Immigration Council and other local and national partners. It operates a non-traditional pro bono model of legal services that directly represents mothers and their children detained at the 2,400-bed South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, Texas. The vast majority of families detained here are fleeing extreme violence in Central America and elsewhere and are seeking asylum in the United States. (Dave’s note: let me be clear, the experience these families face here is considered one of the most appalling and inhumane, and DPBP recruits lawyers to go to Dilley for a week to provide 24/7 legal support for theirs families, serving at the frontlines of this immoral war against immigrants.)
Okay, so why Immigrants’ Rights?
If you know me (or at least have made any attempt at pronouncing my last name) then you can probably tell that I have immigrant roots. My parents benefited from the more generous immigration policies of the 60s and 70s, part of the long and sordid history of US migration. My positive experience as a first-gen American was solely based on the fact that my birth took place within these borders in this particular time frame to people who fit a certain category. We know that for many others - including perhaps many of you - the experience has been much different for reasons that may be both arbitrary and capricious.
Every family in America began with an immigrant's story, so why has "immigrant" become a bad word? It’s time for the country to stand up and remember the values of welcoming immigrants, providing haven for refugees, combatting xenophobia, and supporting human rights for all.
Thank you for your support in making this important birthday one that can make ALL members of our community - regardless of status - feel welcome here!
