Julia Carr hasn't added a story.
My name is Julia Carr. I am an aerial dancer and a Metis jigger. I also practice historical, alternative as well as digital photography. I regularly create collaboratively through the interdisciplinary Body Narratives Collective, but I also make performance pieces with students in classrooms. I have been Assistant Artistic Director of Dancestreams since 2008. This article written in 2014 (https://aeriosa.wordpress.com/2014/10/24/meet-aeriosa-dancer-julia-carr/) is a good introduction to me, my interdisciplinary arts practice, and my first experience of Time_Place_Space (TPS):NOMAD in Sept/Oct 2014.
I have been selected to participate once more in TPS: NOMAD this
year. It is an international action research residency lab for artists
working with collaborative interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary
practice. TPS: NOMAD 2018 occurs in
regional Victoria, with 15 Australian and up to 16 International
artists from Canada, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan; sleeping in
tents, eating together and making work outside or in local spaces for
10 days plus travel to and from the artist's home city and Melbourne.
Artists are asked step out of their comfort zone and collectively re-imagine artistic practice as environmentally sustainable in its creation. In 2016 the initiative introduced the idea of ‘adaptive practice’ to the lab to encourage analysis of the conditions under which artists are making work, in a world of climate instability. Coupled with a rigorous engagement with Indigenous knowledge led by local traditional owners alongside First Nations facilitators, we are asked to consider the space of decolonisation, adaptation and Indigeneity in our arts practice, in the conditions under which we make work, as well as the work itself.
The connections, professional networks and future collaborative
possibilities that emerged from this previous edition for me have been
exciting and a testament to the experimental and experiential
processes of the initiative. Thanks to this experience, I was invited
to Natimuk in regional Victoria (Australia) to collaboratively create
and perform "Dusk" on the community's
grain silo in Oct/Nov 2017. TPS:NOMAD 2018 promises to take me
back to Natimuk and Mt Arapiles to deepen the collaborative
relationships I began to build with local artists and community
members there last year. This is why I am most eager to step out of my
comfort zone and face the challenges of this program. I have this
vision of being able to create light drawings and paintings of dances
on the vertical surface of Declaration Crag with the help of my friends.
I am asking people to contribute money to this campaign because
the highly competitive grant application deadlines that would support
this initiative fall in such a way that I would not know the outcome
until well after the residency has been completed. Funds raised will
be put towards airfare, ground transportation, accommodation, food,
travel health insurance, core costs of the program ($500) &
FundRazr's fee.
