Rooted Productions hasn't added a story.
Femme Fatale is a Rooted Productions
adaptation of the highly controversial play, Purdah,
by Ismail Mahomed - the Director of the Grahamstown National Arts
Festival for eight years. Witness the triggers that culminate in a
crime of passion in a face to face encounter with the modern day
femme fatale: women driven to harm those they love.
If You Like Dangerous Theatre...
The first time this production was staged the cast and Mr. Mahomed received death threats. He has warned us of the potential of this occuring again. We are aware of this risk and are prepared to face it, as it reinforces the fact that this type of gripping theatre needs to be staged. Great theatre is not mindless or superficial; it makes you gasp and cry and laugh, and it challenges what you think and how you feel.
- WHEN: Femme Fatale is 1 of 6 productions that has been chosen from applicants across South Africa to participate in the International Women's Theatre Festival 2016 in Johannesburg on Sat 5 Nov @ 7pm and Sun 6 Nov @ 3pm.
- WHO: Rooted Productions is a Durban collective of performers devoted to theatre, creating their own opportunities in a cut-throat industry. It works on a profit-share basis, so that all members collaboratively invest their time, money and skills in each project and likewise share in the rewards.
- WHY: In South Africa someone (male or female) is raped or sexually abused every 17 seconds. We can't inform you how many suffer other kinds of abuse because it is rarely reported. The lack of statistical information on domestic violence in South Africa is a serious cause for concern, and this gripping production aims to fight complacency and seeks to better understand the complexity of violence. The raw nature of live performance allows the cast to connect with the audience across cultural, gender and racial boundaries over real experiences that are often hushed up because we're ashamed - or worse, because we accept it.
*Please note: 10% of the funds we receive will be donated to the TEARS Foundation (Transform Education About Rape and Sexual abuse), who have come onboard thanks to Charlene Roberson. To visit the TEARS website, go to: http://www.tears.co.za/
What difference can I make?
Don't have the cash to spare? Sometimes you just can't afford to donate, but that doesn't mean you can't help in other ways.
Sharing is caring, so send the links to anyone you can (easy access is provided by simply clicking the relevant icons):
- Share our posts on Facebook
- Tweet about Femme Fatale and follow Rooted Productions on Twitter
- Send an email to your contacts
- Even a good old face-to-face mention to friends or colleagues will do.
The more people we reach, the closer we get to our fundraising goal AND the more awareness we raise for gender-based-violence AND you get to feel that warm gooey glow knowing that you're awesome and that we know it too. It's a win-win-win and all it takes is a click (or ten, or a hundred, it's entirely up to you).
Ok, but I'd rather get involved!
That's great! Receiving funding would alleviate the costs for:
- set pieces
- costumes
- transport
- accommodation
- marketing
- cast and crew fees
- venue hire
Your contribution - in whatever form it takes, however big or small - assists in raising the much appreciated necessary financial assistance for the project to take place. So thank you for your support, every bit of it is appreciated!
What You Get Out Of It
- ~ GOOD VIBRATIONS ~ If you're just the giving type and you love the feeling you get from making a difference, you can choose to make one of our Wishes come true.
- ~ PERKS ~ If that wholesome warm glow is not satisfying enough and you prefer the material kind of reward, check out our Perks. You get to choose from a range of rewards that best suit you.
Regardless of how you get involved, you will be helping TWO organisations at the same time. In supporting Rooted Productions, you will be supporting the growth and sustainability of arts and culture in South Africa across regions as well as contributing to the creation of 4 short term job opportunities (as this is a travelling production, the creation of more than 4 jobs is unfortunately not viable). Furthermore, Rooted Productions have pledged to donate 10% of the money raised to the TEARS Foundation. The cast will be available for a post-performance discussion to engage any questions or comments the audience may have.
Tell Me More
As with any fundraising campaign, we have to take deductions and charges into account when working out our target. As mentioned above, 10% of the funds we receive will be donated to the TEARS Foundation. If we don't raise enough to cover our budget they still receive 10% of the amount we do manage to raise. This donation plus service fees cost as follows:
This means that the minimum target Rooted Productions need to raise is $5 000 in order to receive the R44 500 (approximately $3 200) that we need for the project to break even.
The project expenses are as follows:
What will you do if you raise MORE than this target?
Raising more than our target for the limited budget above would enable the following fantastic additional opportunities beyond the basics, giving the project the best chance to reach its full potential. These are listed as Wish options:
- HUMAN RESOURCES ~ Our first priority should there be more money raised is the people that have offered their services to this project at a largely discounted rate because they believe in it. As much as we HUGELY appreciate it, we would far rather pay them properly for their work, especially in a world where so often artists are expected to work “for the exposure”, aka free of charge. The fact that this amazing team of people agreed to a fee that is nowhere near what it should be for the sake of bringing this project to life is both astounding and uncomfortable, because they deserve far more for their time, effort and services.
- SPECIAL EFFECTS ~ If possible, we would like to hire a fog machine and potentially two footlights. These additions would enhance the whole look and feel of the production and take the aesthetics to the next level.
- SERVE PLATTERS OF FOOD AT THE DURBAN PREMIERE ~ We'd like to be able to set out some platters of delicious finger foods alongside the cocktails at the Durban Premiere Performance, just as an extra touch to take care of our guests.
- INVEST IN THE FUTURE ~ Should we succeed in raising more than we ever imagined was possible, the remaining sum would be invested in Rooted Productions for future projects; with the possibility of taking Femme Fatale on tour.
*Important note: The TEARS Foundation will receive 10% of the funds raised, regardless of our target or budget. The more we raise, the more they receive as well.
Thank you for taking the time to find out about us and playing your part!

Everyone on the team has offered their services to this project at a largely discounted rate because they believe in it. As much as we HUGELY appreciate it, we would far rather pay them properly for their work, especially in a world where so often artists are expected to agree to being exploited and work “for the exposure”. If the opportunity arises and we raise an additional R10 000 ($754.21), we would be able to share it out to every team member in order to adequately and fairly pay for their work.
